“We just called it techno”: Mike Paradinas and Lara Rix-Martin on Heterotic, the early days of µ-Ziq and the ascent of Planet Mu

Mike Paradinas and Lara Rix-Martin

Mike Paradinas isn’t quite a household name. But as far as his impact on the electronic music world goes he is the equal of almost any other DJ or producer you’d care to mention.

As a teenager in the early 90s, operating under the µ-Ziq alias, Paradinas joined the likes of Autechre and the Aphex Twin in pioneering the leftfield takes on techno, UK hardcore and jungle that would come to be called IDM. Across two LPs for the Rephlex label, Paradinas’ productions put a distinctive spin on the burgeoning form, their busy arrangements and bold, often warm melodics establishing a yin to the icy yang of Autechre’s Amber.

Later in the decade, after a brief dalliance with Virgin records (challenging electronic music was hot dollar back then), Paradinas launched his own imprint, Planet Mu. Initially serving as an outlet for the IDM scene and its offspring, the label has since undergone a series of radical overhauls, consistently wrong-footing its detractors and cementing its position at the forefront of all things electronic. In the mid-2000s the label served as an essential platform for dubstep’s launch into the mainstream; in recent years it has become renowned for championing Chicago footwork, helping to plant a previously obscure music firmly in the global musical consciousness.

Introducing: Feloneezy + MIX

We caught up with my boy from Belgrade. Part of the legendary Teklife, and part of Belgrade’s biggest party crew, Mystic Stylez.. FELONEEZY. We caught 5 minutes with the man to talk music, get a free track and cop a mix full of completely unheard footwork dubs. ENJOY.

..And yep, Richard Aki usually does these [presumably better than I do].. but he gave me special permission.

Who are you, where are you and what do you do?

djing and promoting music, with friends or by myself.

What kind of music do you make and/or DJ?

Stuff that I make might sound different from what I would play in a club, a bit more of a headphone/home listening thing… Although it’s always inspired by club music. Then again it could be club music, tracks influenced by grime, rap, house or the Teklife family.

Showing us the soulful side of footwork
Tristan Parker / 25 · 10 · 2012

When listening to genre-splicing, in-demand producer Travis Stewart’s work (from his Machinedrum alias, or collaborative projects Sepalcure and JETS, or even his work with Azealia Banks), it’s hard not to feel that his brain is positively fizzing with musical ideas at any given minute of the day, and his Clash DJ mix only confirms this hypothesis.

Thus, Machinedrum here shows us the soulful side of footwork, and in case you didn’t know, it’s a beauty. It’s a colourful, enticing selection, thoroughly contemporary yet warmly nostalgic at points.

But here’s our chat with Stewart to explain a little more.

Tell us about your mix:

This mix is a soundtrack to your Indian summer, if you’re having one right now, or a mix for those people that are in need of a lil’ sunshine. It’s a very summery/sunny mix to bring you out of your fall funk. Lots of juke/footwork and a lil’ jungle thrown in for good measure. There’s some jokes in there too. I went for the more soulful style of footwork instead of the colder minimal tunes meant more for the dancefloor. I played this exact set at the XLR8R boat party at Dimensions festival in Croatia this summer…

Download an exclusive track from spirited footwork producer Young Smoke

Flight Muzik cadet Young Smoke is primed to become one of footwork’s more recognisable young talents.

2010′s The Track Lab Vol. 1 tape tipped us off to the teenager’s unusually prickly, pointillist take on the Chicago sound. Still only 18, he’s since made it onto the second volume of Planet Mu’s trendsetting Bangs & Works series, and, more pertinently, secured a full-length album deal with Mike Paradinas’ label.

With the Space Zone LP set to drop later this month, FACT have an exclusive download of non-album track ‘High Lyfe’. It’s an airy, gentle, oddly serene number; those chattering footwork polyrhythms are there, but they’re much less forceful than, say, your next DJ Rashad or RP Boo record…
