Here’s the show from last Sunday… this one was an all 10″ record special, so obviously all vinyl. Lots of bigger tunes in this/remixes of big tunes, thanks to the fantastic 10″ output of labels like Moving Shadow. Apologies for the dumb computer voice shout outs, the mic input on my mixer is still broken but the chat was pretty lively and people were asking for shouts so I obliged the only way I could!

So, are you originally from Leicester?
No, originally from Kent. Born in Bromley, brought up in South East London, Lewishsam; then moved to Berkshire and then Kent. I’ve been living in the midlands since 1985.

How did you get involved in the Hardcore and Rave scene?
I was already producing Hip Hop type stuff anyway. Then a mate of mine took me out to Shelly’s in Stoke-on-Trent. And that was that basically.

When was that?
1991 or ’92 I think.

So you were producing music before you were raving?
Yeah, yeah. I’ve been messing around with stuff since about ‘88 or ’89.

What inspired you to get into production in the first place?
Into production? My Dad’s a musician. He was an acoustic guitarist. He had stuff like a keyboard and sequencer and I kind of got into it from there.

So no background in Soundsystems in London then?
No, I was a DJ even before that anyway, I just used to play Hip Hop. But with my Dad still having all that musical equipment around, I wanted to have a go with it and went from there really.

6 years of blood sweat and tears
6 years of love for what we do

Still going strong as one of Boston’s most underground and influential nights, BASSIC steps up to celebrate 6 massive years with the return of a special guest (and a very special 6th anniversary t-shirt).

J:Kenzo (Artikal Music, Tempa) UK
Returning to us from Kent, UK J:Kenzo has been crafting his own unique productions for some time now. Since his first official release in 2007, J:Kenzo’s jungle and techno influenced tracks have seen the light of day through labels such as Tempa, Dub Police, Argon Records, 2nd Drop and his very own imprint Artikal Music UK. His career took a critical turn when DJ Youngsta became aware of his talent and took J:Kenzo under his wing. Since then tracks like ‘The Roteks’ and ‘Ruffhouse’ have had an even bigger impact on the international dubstep scene, gaining him support from selectors such as Hatcha, N-Type, Distance, DJ Laurent Garnier and Emalkay. 2012 was a huge success for J:Kenzo when he dropped his self-titled album on Tempa recordings and launched his own label Artikal Music. Expect a night of serious low-end business.

AxH (Tuba, BASSIC) Boston
AxH, (formerly Grizzly), has been dedicated to bass music and DJ-ing for over a decade. Based in Boston, MA, AxH got his start as Prodigal Son, producing Ragga Jungle that received praise and plays all over the world. AxH caught the Dubstep bug in 2006 while serving overseas in the U.S. Military, and has been pushing forward ever since! He has been releasing music digitally and on wax since 2004, and has played coast to coast in North America, supporting his releases. 2008 saw AxH perform in Kiev, Ukraine, a set that people are still talking about today. He has become a prolific producer as he’s honed his deep, dark, and heavy style with his tunes have been receiving support by the one and only DJ Youngsta on RinseFM. AxH is one of the residents for BASSIC Boston, (Boston’s premiere Dubstep night), where he can be heard dropping entire sets of his original tracks. You can also hear him on BASSIC’s Sub.FM show every Saturday night.

Spliffolian (SUBduction) Boston
Spliffolian AKA Selecta Folian has been spinning records for the past nine years. Always an avid music listener, musician, and fond of a vast diversity of styles, he began djing at his college radio station in Portland, OR as a conscious roots, reggae, and dub selecta. Holding down a radio show at KRRC for 6 years he fine tuned his DJ skills and in the process became exposed to new styles and flexes which eventually led him to the sounds of dubstep and future dub. Upon moving to San Francisco in 2007 he became more fully immersed in the SF dubstep scene and style, playing local dubstep nights such as Brapdem! as well as reggae nights such as Jah-Warior Shelters’ Bless Up weekly at Milk and other underground venues. Departing San Francisco for Utrecht, NL in August 2008, Spliffolian quickly linked up with local dubstep crews the Randstad Rollaz and DUBieus, holding down a residency at the Rollaz’ monthly Wobble Trouble and making appearances at other parties in the Utrecht/Amsterdam areas including LED at SJU, Gute Laune! (Eat This!) at ACU, and Dub City at Club Bitterzoet. Now residing in Boston, Spliffolian has continued to murk whatever scene he finds himself in playing at local dubstep nights Bassic and Dubwise with more appearances to come alongside his new local crew subDuction.

These days, in order to stand out in the music media world you’ve got to be a jack of all trades. One such well-rounded Boston music media player is Nick Minieri, the 33-year-old East Boston resident behind Beantown Boogiedown, a blog that features everything from party photos to show listings to curated selections of electronic music. As of this week, he can now add label head to his lengthening resume, with the launch of Zakim Records, and its inaugural release from Boston’s Doctor Jeep.

Minieri, who moved to Boston from Syracuse in 2004, and works as a graphic designer at the Mullen advertising agency, never really intended to get into online media, he explained over the course of a night in Central Square, bouncing from Phoenix Landing (where he’d gone for the long running drum and bass party Elements), to Cafe 1369, and on to the Middle East. It was the drum and bass fare at Elements that was his introduction to the world of electronic music in Boston, he said.

Designer experimented by lasering ridges into acrylic and paper
Step-by-step instructions explain how you can turn your own downloads into wooden records

By VICTORIA WOOLLASTON

You can now turn your favourite music downloads into playable records made from materials you have lying around the house.
Amanda Ghassaei, 24, from San Francisco has created the world's first laser-cut wooden records using songs from Radiohead and Joy Division.
And the software engineer has made the instructions available to download, making it possible to create your own at home.

Ghassaei previously used 3D printers to print records from her MP3 downloads.
She wanted to find a way for people without 3D printers to make their own records, and has designed a way of making records out of paper, acrylic and wood.
Ghassaei created a digital waveform file from the MP3 and converted into a PDF.
Needles on a record player pick up vibrations based on the shape of the record's surface.
The waveform was then cut into the wood using lasers to create the 'shape' of the song.

You might never attend one, but keep this bit of information in your back pocket: A new trend today is the ‘algorave,’ in which people dance in a rave-like environment to music generated by algorithms.

According to a central algorave website – I abstain from dubbing it ‘official – the goal is to take a common piece of software that allows someone to create music based on an algorithm, and then compose the tunes live as people dance. The focus is not on the musician, incidentally, but instead on how people react to what they create.

Alex McLean, a proponent of the algorave movement, provided comment to BoingBoing concerning the idea, stating that:

"Algoraves are parties where people come together to dance to algorithms. It generally involves some live coding but any producers making music. [...] Generally some aspect of the algorithmic processes are visible, but the focus is actually on the audience, and having serious fun."

The original sound of drum ’n’ bass is back with a vengeance. As more DJs embrace the Amen choppage of jungle and more producers unleash their own take on it, we head to the UK club that plays nothing else.

Words: Alex Volume
Photos: Tamsin Mae

Mixmag arrives at an unassuming pub on the outskirts of Bristol: yellow walls, heavy wooden furniture, a questionable speaker stack in the corner blaring out top-volume dub records, and ageing men taking turns on the mic. A featherweight boxing match on a projector screen provides the backdrop. Are we in the right place? Then we spot some double doors at the back of the club’s car park that are struggling to contain the drums within. Our doubts end. Inside, Bailey is mid-set, the packed-out main room air-drumming along to his lecture in Amen breaks. He drops Equinox’s ‘Ital Lion Tuff Head’, released on his own Intabeats imprint in 2005, and the place goes ballistic. We’re here for the fourth birthday (and label launch) of Jungle Syndicate.

Cable London's web site is now displaying the following message:

We Have Closed with Immediate Effect:
Official Statement

Dear World,

It is with a huge amount of sadness that we announce Cable has closed with immediate effect.

We have been forced to close following two years of ongoing legal battles with Network Rail, who took possession of the venue this morning with an entry order, putting us out of business and leaving our 70 staff without jobs. This is due to them allegedly requiring the space back for the redevelopment of London Bridge station. It is an utterly devastating blow to what is a much loved, hugely successful, well respected music venue and media business.

This is not only a huge loss to the loyal fans and staff of Cable, but to London's clubbing community as a whole. With enormous pride, we delivered the very best talent in an environment that upheld the history of the early SE1 rave scene and supported as many musical styles as possible.

We are obviously devastated and still in shock by the news and know there will be questions. As you can appreciate, there is much work to be done and many arrangements to be made behind the scenes. A full press release will follow.

If you are presently a ticket holder for an event that was scheduled to take place at Cable, please do not worry - further information will follow in due course.

Our sincerest thanks,

The Cable Team x

This year for TOGETHER Fest BASSIC is about to rattle your chestplate hahda’ than evah! Bring your bassface because we’ve got the one and only DISTANCE behind the decks!!!!!

DISTANCE (Chestplate, Get Darker, Techtonic) London UK
The mastermind behind Chestplate recordings DJ Distance hails from the South London dubstep nucleus and is an originator of the dubstep sound. He has been involved in its development since its early years and has produced tracks with the likes of Skream, Benga, Pinch and Cyrus.

With a background of heavy metal and experimental industrial music, his approach to dubstep is truly different to any others. Whilst many producers reference influences such as King Tubby to Lee Scratch Perry, Distance main influence hails from the likes of Sepultura, Pantera and Fear Factory.
Distance as producer, DJ and label owner (Chestplate Records), has been pushing things in a direction all of his own. Gathering early support from the legendary John Peel and going on to be part of the utterly seminal Dubstep Warz show on Radio 1 presented by Mary Anne Hobbs, Distance has forged a name for himself as a critical figure in the scene.

Distance is a regular at the seminal raves such as FWD, DMZ, Exodus, SUB: DUB and more. His Dj bookings have taken him across the globe where he devastates dance floors and sound systems in his own unimitable style.

Distance’s recorded output is also formidable, finding homes on labels as underground and seminal as Hotflush, Tectonic and Boka in his early career, to ending up on the world reputed Planet Mu, on which Distance released his debut album in 2007.

Distance’s studio has spawned multiple stone cold killers over a range of styles but all uniquely Distance, highlighting why his new releases are some of the most highly anticipated in the scene.

If you’re a fan of heavy metal, industrial rock, dub, reggae and techno….then this is the sound for you. Though hard to relate these binary opposite genres together, somehow…Distance does just that.

JACK SPARROW (Deep Medi, Tectonic) UK

Leeds based Ryan Wild AKA Jack Sparrow has been producing his own strain of Dubstep since 2006 and in that time has shown his versatility in the studio ranging from dark tribal Techno to heavy “soundsytem” Dubstep styles.

With residencies at Exodus/Dmz Leeds and Outlook festival (voted best european music festival 2011) he has fast become a household name all over the globe regularly touring Asia,Europe and UK with his take on Dubstep.

His Debut album Circadian followed a string of releases with Pinch’s tectonic label based in bristol and achieved a 4.5 stars from the like of Resident Advisor (4.5 stars) and Mixmag (4 stars) and also charting highly in the best albums of 2010.

Jack Sparrow has also shown his versatility by remixing for many names and labels including Skepta (3Beat), Count and Sinden (Domino), Birdy (Atlantic), XXXY (Pollen), Mumdance (Mad Decent), Photek (Tectonic) and RSS (Wall Of Sound) amongst others. Jack has also worked closely with Loopmasters in 2011 to develop sample cd’s for other producers to use within dubstep productions.

Sparrow is also 1 half of production duo “Author” (Tectonic) who released their debut album in November 2011 which sees a musical take on Dubstep. Jack Sparrow and Ruckspin have been touring globally the Author live show to sold out events with a great reception.

MOLDY (Embassy, TUBA, BASSIC) Boston
Boston based dubstep artist Moldy is notorious for mind-bending DJ sets and productions that stay true to the “deep and exploratory drive of the early days” (Mixmag, 12/12/2011). A “veteran of American dubstep” (flavorwire.com, 4/19/10), Moldy has been “quietly leading the charge of US dubstep producers since day one” (dubwarnyc.com, 5/29/10).
