In the land of Rice a Roni and Cable cars resides a DJ who represents the other side of that area; sideshows, scrapers and getting hype. In other words, Tha Megatron is representing the underground sounds of the Bay Area from all angles on the music tip. From “Yay Area” mob music to UK Garage and everywhere in between Megatron has literally played for people from all walks of life and plans to do so ‘til the wheels of steel fall off.
Born in San Francisco and raised in Richmond, California, Tha Megatron experienced an abundant variety of influences ranging from Bay Area rap artists such as Too Short to scratch DJs like Q-Bert and other local heroes in the music scene.
After watching Hip Hop DJs in music videos and live DJ battles doing amazing turntable acrobatics the inspiration began to set in. During 1996, Megatron began his journey as a DJ at the age of 16, honing his skills at local house parties across town in Richmond and entering various DJ battles around the Bay. In 1997 DrumnBass and Rave Culture started to come into the picture and it was through the Rave and Jungle scenes that Megatron was able to create his own identity as a DJ in a place where DJs were as common as Nike Air Force 1s. From then on the music has taken Tha Megatron through a journey that mirrors his life; full of differences that when combined sum up the best aspects of life.
In the search for the perfect beat Tha Megatron became very intrigued by UK music culture and along with DrumnBass he began to follow the development of another form of urban music rising out of London. UK Garage began to cross the Atlantic and into America and when it hit San Francisco around the late 1990s it rocked the city like an earthquake. DJs such as Mike Bee, Scott Edmonds and Stareyes began to introduce these sounds at local clubs and undergrounds and all UK Garage events such as Step, which included residents Dom Some, JP and Enzyme, started to let people know what UK Garage was all about. Tha Megatron also started to build up a collection of classic UK Garage tracks that added to an already diverse record collection so that he too could share to people his love for the music. From then on Megatron has been a DJ and a fan of the music through all of the Garage scene's transformations and to this day continues to push the sound forward to anyone willing to listen.
Currently Tha Megatron is focusing on pushing things even further on the music tip. Hip-Hop wise he has been entering DJ battles around the bay including the B-Side Records Mixing and Scratching Battles that take place at the record store located in Berkeley, Ca. In the world of DrumnBass Megatron continues to "rinse out the massive" with his mixes in the clubs and he also will begin to present his original music for the first time ever for the DnB heads. As for UK Garage Megatron has begun to promote the sounds of Grime in a major way. He has played at parties such as the Choon Up and Dub Farm 3 alongside Grime and Garage djs such as Subtek and many others who are passionate about pushing the sound forward. Another major development for this year is the formation of he B.I.G. Crew (Bringin’ Ill Grime) which includes DJ’s The One and Munk. The three are collaborating and working on projects for 2005 including exclusive mixes and unreleased tracks. The future is looking good and Tha Megatron hopes that from here on out the sounds from the underground will begin to take over the world in a major way.
