DUBSTEP AND DRUNMBASS PRODUCER AND DJ IN Portland MaineFundamentally bass-heavy, dark and meditative, the dubstep sound can be described as a virulent musical strain, constantly mutating. Seasoned listeners of everything from dub reggae, hip hop and jazz to jungle, techno and breakbeat have been infected.
The reported symptoms of dubstep in humans have ranged from head nodding (grooving) to skanking (e.g., moving the feet, arms, and pelvic region) as well as severe reactions to sub-bass frequencies (90 Hz and under) sometimes accompanied by repeated cries of "rewind", the firing of air-horns and raising of pint glasses. Whatever dubstep is, Portland, Maine, based DJ and producer Selector Moldy finds himself operating on the frontline, as the intriguing genre grows beyond it’s London roots and emerges from the underground.
A veteran DJ of over a decade, in 1998 he pioneered 24/7 internet radio with Factory188.com in Portland, Maine. Later relocating to Boston, he cut his teeth playing dubs of his original productions at the mainstay Elements; in New York City, he held residencies at the Offshore Recordings’ party Push, and staple Konkrete Jungle.
Organizing a series of parties in New York City called Lurkery, he introduced the Big Apple to talent from the UK like DJ Pinch, DJ Distance and Headhunter as well as domestic talent like Grapes and Venez. Each event garnered an editor’s pick in Time Out New York. Demand for Moldy is on the rise as cities such as Boston, Hartford, New London, New York City, Philadelphia, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Atlanta, Miami, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, and London call on him to raise the bar with his choice selections.
He has shared the stage with influential drum & bass and dubstep artists including Adam F, Breakage, Digital, Dara, Dieselboy, Juju, Loefah, Pinch, Distance, Headhunter, Joe Nice, Dave Q, Djunya, N-Type, Mala, Quest, Silkie, Plastician, Skream, and The Bomb Squad of hip hop fame.
Between gigs he keeps his nose to the grindstone in the studio, recognized internationally as one of the most prominent American dubstep producers.
In 2006 he formed Heavy Pressure Recordings. His Windmill Dub/The Black Forest (Part 1) was released in December 2006, followed by Grapes' The Sheep of Lords/Rabbit Stew in May 2007. Moldy’s highly anticipated Cod & Chips/Numbers Dub will see release in the summer of 2008, distributed worldwide by Load Media.
Released March 2008 on UK label ‘Earwax, Glory/Glory Dub (EAR006), featuring Brooklyn based Dub War resident MC Juakali, has been smacking dance-floors in the US and UK alike, with support from UK DJs Pinch, Distance, Joker, Peverelist, Plastician, Cyrus, and Baltimore’s DJ Joe Nice.
Forthcoming on Deep Medi Musik, Through the Rain and The Void are two tracks bound to make an impression as the first American releases on this lauded UK label.
